How FIRE Works
FIRE Number = Annual Expenses ÷ Withdrawal Rate. At 4% withdrawal rate, you need 25× your yearly expenses.
Lean FIRE: Minimalist lifestyle with ~$25,000–$40,000/year spending. Very low FIRE number.
FIRE: Classic Financial Independence, using the 4% safe withdrawal rate from the Trinity Study.
Fat FIRE: Generous spending post-retirement, using a lower 3% withdrawal rate for extra safety.
Barista FIRE: Semi-retire early with a smaller portfolio, supplemented by part-time income.
