Free Tip Calculator Online — Calculate Tips and Split the Bill Fairly
Free tip calculator with bill splitting. Choose tip percentage, split between any number of people, and round per person — works on phone, no sign-up.
Splitting a restaurant bill at the end of dinner shouldn't slow everyone down. Our Tip Calculator handles tip percentage, total bill, and split-per-person in one screen — built mobile-first because you'll mostly use it at a table.
How much to tip
Tipping varies by country and service. A rough guide:
| Country | Typical restaurant tip |
|---|---|
| United States | 15–20% (often 18% default) |
| Canada | 15–18% |
| United Kingdom | 10–12.5% (often included) |
| Germany / France / Spain | 5–10% (often included) |
| Japan | No tip — sometimes refused |
| Vietnam / Thailand | Round up or 5–10% |
| Australia | 10% for good service, not required |
For other services: bartenders $1–2 per drink, taxi 10–15%, hotel housekeeping $2–5 per night, hair salon 15–20%.

Splitting the bill: even vs. itemized
Even split is simplest: total ÷ number of people. Use this when everyone ate similar amounts.
Itemized split charges each person for what they ordered. Use this when:
- One person ordered an expensive entrée or shared dessert
- Some had drinks and others didn't
- Couples vs. solo diners are at the same table
Our calculator supports both. Itemized mode lets you assign each line item to one or more people, and it computes tax and tip proportionally.
Should you tip on tax?
In the US, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct. Tipping on the post-tax total is more generous and what most people do — the difference is small (around 1.5–2% of the subtotal in most states).
Our calculator lets you toggle between pre-tax and post-tax tipping so you can use whichever convention you prefer.
Round-up and convenience
When splitting, you often end up with awkward amounts like $23.47 per person. Two ways to handle it:
- Round up — each person pays $24 and the small overage goes to a bigger tip
- Designate a payer — one person pays the awkward cents, others pay round numbers and Venmo/PayPal them back
The calculator shows both rounded and exact amounts.
Service charge vs. tip
Many countries automatically add a service charge (10–15%) to the bill. Important rules:
- If a service charge is included, an additional tip is optional, not expected
- In the UK, service charges are "discretionary" and you can ask to remove them
- In France and Spain, "service compris" means service is already included
- In Japan and South Korea, tipping on top can confuse or offend
Always check the bill before adding a tip on top of an included service charge.
Group dining tips
For larger groups (8+ people):
- Many restaurants automatically add 18–20% gratuity — check the bill
- Use a single payer + payback app to avoid 8 separate card swipes
- For travel/work groups, designate one person to handle the math and submit a single expense
Quick reference: tip on common amounts
| Bill | 15% | 18% | 20% |
|---|---|---|---|
| $20 | $3.00 | $3.60 | $4.00 |
| $50 | $7.50 | $9.00 | $10.00 |
| $100 | $15.00 | $18.00 | $20.00 |
| $150 | $22.50 | $27.00 | $30.00 |
| $200 | $30.00 | $36.00 | $40.00 |
For anything else, the Tip Calculator does the math in under a second.
