About SWIFT/BIC Codes
A SWIFT code (also known as BIC, Business Identifier Code) is an 8 or 11-character ID for a specific bank or branch (ISO 9362). It's used to route international wire transfers.
Structure (BIC11)
- Bank Code (4 letters): institution code
- Country Code (2 letters): ISO 3166-1 alpha-2
- Location Code (2 alphanumeric): city/region
- Branch Code (3 alphanumeric, optional): "XXX" = primary office
Location Code Conventions
- 2nd character =
0→ Test BIC - 2nd character =
1→ Passive (not on SWIFTNet) - 2nd character =
2→ Reverse billing - Otherwise → Live connected institution
Validation runs entirely in your browser. This tool checks structural validity (format, country code, conventions) but does not verify that a given BIC actually exists in the SWIFT directory.
