Lossy vs. lossless compression

Lossy compression permanently removes data to shrink the file. JPEG is the classic example. A quality setting of 80–85% typically produces a file 60–70% smaller than the original, with no visible difference to the human eye.

Lossless compression reorganizes data without discarding it. PNG and WebP (lossless mode) preserve every pixel. Useful for screenshots, logos, and anything with text or sharp edges where artifacts would be obvious.

Choosing the right format

What quality setting should you use?

For JPEG and lossy WebP, quality between 75–85% is the sweet spot for most web images:

  • Quality 90–100% — Nearly identical to original, minimal savings
  • Quality 75–85% — 50–70% smaller, imperceptible difference on screen
  • Quality 60–74% — Noticeable artifacts on close inspection, fine for thumbnails
  • Quality below 60% — Visible blocking and banding, avoid for primary content

Progressive loading

JPEG supports progressive encoding — the image loads in low-resolution first, then sharpens as more data arrives. This makes pages feel faster even before the full image downloads. Most compression tools offer this as an option.

Responsive images matter too

Compression alone is not enough if you serve a 2000px-wide image to a mobile phone with a 400px screen. Use the srcset and sizes HTML attributes to serve appropriately sized images:
