Female Body Shapes

Hourglass
Bust and hips approximately equal, with a defined waist (≥25% smaller).

Hips noticeably wider than bust; weight carried in lower body.

Inverted Triangle
Bust/shoulders broader than hips; athletic upper body.

Apple / Round
Waist measurement larger than bust and hips; weight in midsection.

Rectangle / Banana
Bust, waist, and hips all similar; little waist definition.

Anthropometric Reference Cutoffs

Waist Circumference (WHO/IDF)

  • Male: ≥ 94 cm increased risk; ≥ 102 cm substantially increased
  • Female: ≥ 80 cm increased risk; ≥ 88 cm substantially increased

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHO 2008)

  • Male: high risk > 0.90
  • Female: high risk > 0.85

Waist-to-Height Ratio (Ashwell)

  • Healthy: 0.40 – 0.50
  • Increased: 0.50 – 0.60 · High: > 0.60

Body Fat % (US Navy method)

  • Male: 100 / [1.0324 − 0.19077·log₁₀(waist−neck) + 0.15456·log₁₀(height)] − 450
  • Female: same with (waist + hip − neck)
