Free QR code generator online

QR codes are everywhere — restaurant menus, business cards, product packaging, event tickets. Creating one used to require an account or a paid tool. Today you can generate a QR code in seconds, completely free, with no sign-up.

What can a QR code contain?

A QR code is not just for URLs. It can encode any text-based data:

Type Example use
URL Link to a website, product page, or social profile
Plain text A short message, address, or instructions
Email Pre-filled email address and subject line
Phone number Tap to call on mobile
SMS Pre-filled text message
WiFi credentials Share WiFi password without typing
vCard / contact Save contact info directly to phone
Location Link to a map coordinate

How to generate a QR code for free

Using our QR Code Generator:

  1. Open the tool — no account or download needed
  2. Select the content type (URL, text, WiFi, etc.)
  3. Enter your content
  4. Customize size and error correction level if needed
  5. Download as PNG or SVG

The QR code is generated instantly in your browser. Nothing is stored or sent to a server.

What is error correction level?

QR codes have built-in redundancy that lets them be scanned even when partially damaged or obscured. There are four levels:

Level Data recovery Best for
L (Low) 7% Clean digital displays
M (Medium) 15% General use, default
Q (Quartile) 25% Industrial printing
H (High) 30% Logos overlaid on QR code

If you plan to put a logo in the center of your QR code, use level H so the code still scans despite the obscured center.

PNG vs. SVG — which format to download?

  • PNG — best for web use, social media, and documents. Use at least 512×512px for print.
  • SVG — vector format, scales to any size without quality loss. Best for print, merchandise, signage, or any large-format use.

Always download SVG if you plan to print the QR code larger than a business card.

QR code size guide for print

Use case Minimum size Recommended
Business card 2 × 2 cm 2.5 × 2.5 cm
Flyer / poster 3 × 3 cm 4 × 4 cm
Packaging 2 × 2 cm 3 × 3 cm
Billboard / banner 10 × 10 cm 15 × 15 cm

A QR code that is too small will fail to scan on older phones or in poor lighting. When in doubt, go larger.

How to make a QR code scannable at distance

The scanning distance is roughly 10× the size of the QR code. A 3 cm QR code scans reliably at 30 cm. A 10 cm QR code can be scanned from about 1 metre. For outdoor signage or billboards, size up significantly.

Tips for better QR codes

  • Keep URLs short — shorter content means simpler QR codes that scan faster. Use a URL shortener if your URL is very long.
  • High contrast — dark code on light background. Never use low-contrast color combinations.
  • Test before printing — always scan your QR code with multiple phones before printing at scale.
  • Add a call to action — "Scan to see menu" or "Scan for discount" increases scan rates significantly.
  • Leave a quiet zone — keep a white border around the QR code equal to at least 4 modules (the small squares) wide.

Reading QR codes from images

If you have an image with a QR code and need to decode what it contains, use our QR Code Reader. Upload any image and it will extract the encoded content instantly.

QR codes for WiFi sharing

The WiFi QR code type is one of the most useful. Instead of reading out a password character by character, guests can scan the QR code and connect instantly. The QR code encodes:

  • Network name (SSID)
  • Password
  • Security type (WPA2, WPA3, WEP, or open)

Print it and stick it on your router or frame it for guests. Our generator handles all three fields correctly so phones connect automatically after scanning.

Summary

QR codes are a fast, universal bridge between physical and digital content. Use our QR Code Generator to create one in seconds — no account, no watermark, download as PNG or SVG. For decoding existing QR codes, the QR Code Reader works just as quickly.
