Validate SWIFT/BIC codes — full ISO 9362 structure breakdown with bank, country, location, and branch identification, plus test/passive/live status detection

About SWIFT/BIC Codes

A SWIFT code (also known as BIC, Business Identifier Code) is an 8 or 11-character ID for a specific bank or branch (ISO 9362). It's used to route international wire transfers.

Structure (BIC11)

  • Bank Code (4 letters): institution code
  • Country Code (2 letters): ISO 3166-1 alpha-2
  • Location Code (2 alphanumeric): city/region
  • Branch Code (3 alphanumeric, optional): "XXX" = primary office

Location Code Conventions

  • 2nd character = 0Test BIC
  • 2nd character = 1Passive (not on SWIFTNet)
  • 2nd character = 2Reverse billing
  • Otherwise → Live connected institution

Validation runs entirely in your browser. This tool checks structural validity (format, country code, conventions) but does not verify that a given BIC actually exists in the SWIFT directory.
